Car accidents happen every year.  In fact, according to studies there are about 6 million car accidents per year that happen in the U.S.  Injuries often occur afterwards, which can cause a plethora of musculoskeletal conditions including low back pain, neck pain and headaches.   Chiropractic can help alleviate some of these problems in a variety of ways.

Chiropractic adjustments

After car accidents, sometimes the body doesn’t move like it did before.  In fact, people can experience changes to the spine that cause restrictions in movement such as difficulty of turning the head or bending over.  This leads to a condition coined a subluxation or “misalignment” that means a part of the spine doesn’t move properly.  This can cause pain and dysfunction to the spine and negatively impacts one’s health and wellbeing.

For example, lets say that someone is hit by another car, which in turn, causes a part of the spine or a section of the ribs to not move properly.  As a consequence, the person affected would feel pain and perhaps even have difficulty taking a deep breath due to the rib involvement.  Now, lets say that person were to go to a hospital to be checked for their injuries.  How would they be examined and treated?  Most likely they would receive an exam and would be given pain medications to reduce the pain and inflammation, however, the pain returns most of the time.  Why do you think so?  Simple.  Chiropractic’s main goal is to find the cause whereas the current medical model looks for major fractures and pathology after a car accident for example.  Chiropractors’ main goal is to find and fix misalignments in the spine so it can heal and function better as a whole.

“The spine is the lifeline. A lot of people should go to a chiropractor but they don't know it..”

Therapeutic Modalities

Furthermore, most chiropractors also offer therapeutic modalities to further aid in the healing process.  Part of the battle when first treating patients after a car accident is that the muscles can be in spasm, which is a normal response for the body after an accident.   When the muscles are in spasm, it can be difficult to execute adjustments at first because the muscles prevent the bones from moving.  However, with the use of therapeutic modalities, such as electrical myo-stimulation (EMS), it makes it easier to perform chiropractic adjustments. The goal of EMS is to us it to relax muscles by exhausting the muscle fibers themselves.  This therapy interrupts the neurologic cycle of spasm and dysfunction thereby allowing efficient treatment and increased tissue healing between treatments.

Another therapy that can be used is cryotherapy.  Cryotherapy is a no brainer because it is the simplest way to decrease inflammation after a traumatic event such as a car accident.  Using natural forms of therapy to get rid of inflammation work with the body’s ability to heal versus against it.  An example of a treatment that reduces inflammation that work against the body is Ibuprofen.  The reason that using ibuprofen can be dangerous is because it can cause damage to the stomach, kidneys and brain if used overtime.

Lastly, another popular therapeutic modality that is good to try after a car accident is intersegmental traction.  Mechanical traction of the spine can be applied to enhance the biomechanics of joint complexes through normalization of muscle and connective tissue length.  Essentially, this type of modality puts movement into the spine, which helps the body function better.  Some of you might ask, what is intersegmental traction?  Essentially, you lay on a table that has a roller underneath you.  The roller moves up and down your spine which creates movement throughout.  When the muscles aren’t in spasm, this can be very therapeutic, however, if the muscles are still in spasm and the back is tender, it may be uncomfortable and signify that the spine isn’t ready for this type of therapy.

The best way to decide which type of therapy is best for you after a car accident is to contact one of our doctors.  It is best to be evaluated by a doctor of chiropractic before utilizing therapeutic modalities.  If you or someone you know has been in a car accident, please feel free to call our office or pass our contact information to the person in need.
